Apply Sealant Only On A Fully Cured Concrete Floor
Today’s epoxy sealants are designed to bond to fully cured concrete. Before applying the sealer, follow the recommended cure time for your new garage floor or driveway. If you have an older floor in good condition, it can also be sealed for extended longevity.
A Good Scrub & Dry Are Essential
Once the concrete is cured, use a pressure washer and mild detergent to remove dust, dirt, and grease from the surface. This helps your sealant fully bond to the concrete mix’s aggregate. Leave the surface to air dry, or use a large floor shop fan to expedite the process.
Work With Mother Nature For The Best Results
Many premium epoxy sealants require temperatures between 40 F and 90 F in order to fully adhere to the concrete. If you are working outdoors, check the forecast and look for several days of clear, comfortable weather to achieve the best results. If it’s too cold, the sealant will not be able to seep into all the nooks and crannies. Too hot, and it runs through the concrete instead of creating a seal.
Properly Seal Expansion Joints
If your concrete floor was poured with expansion joints or has old cracks, those will need sealing, too. Cracks must be cleaned up to create a v-shape wide enough to accept a foam backer rod with some room to spare at the top. Pour the epoxy over the joint and smooth it out before it sets to create a flat surface that retains its flexibility.
