If your floor is starting to look scratched or faded, you might be wondering whether it’s possible to polish or resurface your epoxy. Deciding between a buffer or applying a new topcoat will depend on the extent of the damage and the finished look you’re going for.
Polishing Works Great For Minor Scratches
Although epoxy floors are highly durable and able to withstand a lot of abuse, wear and tear will affect the finish over time. If minor scratches have started to appear, you might be able to take care of them with some hand polishing and buffing.
How To Buff Epoxy Floors
To make your whole floor shine, you may want to go over it lightly with an orbital sander with a buffing cloth. Then start using a floor buffer regularly to help keep your floor looking shiny and new.
When To Resurface Epoxy
There are times when you might want to apply a new layer of epoxy over an older coat. Sometimes, just the top clear coat has gotten worn and dingy or started to wear thin; if no significant damage has occurred, a new clear coat can do a lot to restore the shine of an older floor.
When Not To Polish Or Resurface
Sometimes it’s just not possible to either polish or apply a new epoxy coat over an old floor. For instance, putting a fresh coat over peeling or delaminated surface may cause more harm than good. Epoxy should also never be applied directly on top of paint or concrete sealers.
Starting Fresh With Floor Finishes
You’ll be better off grinding the surface to remove the old coating in any of these cases. Then you can prepare the surface and install a new epoxy finish or other coatings from scratch.
